Welcoming Opportunities

Kindergarten registration is held annually in February. The purpose of kindergarten registration is to collect registration paperwork, answer parent questions, and obtain a general overview of the kindergarten experience.

Kindergarten open house was started in May 2008 as a way to welcome incoming kindergartners and ease their anxiety about kindergarten. It was implemented as a way for parents and students to see the school, meet Primary staff, and obtain valuable information .

Kindergarten orientation, held on September 2nd, is a third opportunity for students, along with their parents, to become acclimated to the school setting in small, intimate groups. Parents accompany their child to school at preset times. Teachers review the student handbook, provide detailed schedule information, and welcome students to their classrooms.

We hope these experiences were valuable for you and your kindergartner. Please provide suggestions/feedback on how Albertville Primary School could make your kindergartner's experience better.

It would be nice to have an open house with the teachers present, so more parents can meet their child's teacher. Not all are available on the kdg orientation day.

Thanks for the post! I appreciate your feedback! I agree that having as many teachers as possible on open house (this is the one in May) is optimal. This is something that I encourage teachers to attend. However, it is outside the teacher's duty day and is strictly voluntary on their part. They are all at the orientation (the one in September). Students are not assigned teachers until late July so they couldn't meet their teachers in May.

Could the open house be in August, like the elementary schools?

Thanks for the e-mail. This is what I first thought to do when I decided to explore adding an open house. However, after getting feedback from the POPS (parent advisory group) and teaching staff they thought it would be too late for kindergartners to get into the building. Kindergartners exhibit a lot of anxiety during the summer regarding starting kindergarten so we waited until as late as possible in May to hold the open house. We thought this would be better to offer two opportunities to get the incoming kindergarteners excited and ease their fears by offering the May open house and the September orientation. The feedback we received form parents was very favorable. Again, thanks for your feedback. It’s appreciated.
